Frederick William Faber (1814-1863) “Man has considerable powers, considerable enough to leave him, as proprietor of this planet. He has one power in particular, which is not sufficiently dwelt on. It is the power of making the world happy, or, at least, of so greatly diminishing the amount of unhappiness in it as to make it quite a different world from what it is at present. This power is called kindness.  …

Amen Modern Malady: Ancient Remedy If you travel in Europe, especially on pilgrimage, you often find that the residents of various cities and towns are very proud of their canonized saints. Siena boasts St. Catherine. Assisi boasts St. Francis and St. Clare. Lourdes gives us St. Bernadette, etc. Spain, France, Germany all have many such places that vaunt well-known saints. We rightly or wrongly love many things, from pizza to sports to family and even to various kinds of sin. …

The Language Of Heaven: Spiritual Exercise 02/08/21

The Language of Heaven One of the deepest purifications in the spiritual life is a purification to the truth.  Closely tied to this is a purification of language… because, we most often offend against the truth through language. Words are meant to convey reality.  They allow us to have honest communication with God and with each other.  Changing words, abusing or misusing language does not change reality but it deeply affects our perception of what is real and what isn’t, and can alter, as a consequence, our views, opinions and thoughts in such a way that we become disconnected from reality, from truth. Josef Pieper, a renowned Catholic philosopher, offers a prophetic warning: “The degradation…of man through man has its beginning at the almost imperceptible moment when the word loses its dignity.  The dignity of the word, to be sure, consists in this: through the word is accomplished what no other means can accomplish, namely, communication based on reality.” To examine our use of language, one has only to imagine what the use of language will …

IMMACULATE HEART OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

IMMACULATE HEART OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Source: iBreviary The attention of Christians was early attracted by the love and virtues of the Heart of Mary. It was, so to speak, at the foot of the Cross that the Christian heart first made the acquaintance of the Heart of Mary. Simeon’s prophecy paved the way and furnished the devotion with one of its favourite formulae and most popular representations: the heart pierced with a sword. But Mary was not merely passive at the foot of the Cross; “she cooperated through charity”, as St. Augustine says, “in the work of our redemption”. It is only in the twelfth, or towards the end of the eleventh century, that slight indications of a regular devotion are perceived in a sermon by St. Bernard (De duodecim stellis). Stronger evidences are discernible in the pious meditations on the Ave Maria and the Salve Regina, usually attributed either to St. …
